Indian boxing fans were left disappointed after the first World Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament for Paris 2024 concluded in Busto Arsizio, Italy. While several boxers displayed promise, none of the men’s team, including rising star Nishant Dev, managed to secure a coveted Olympic quota spot .
Dev, a 23-year-old World Championships bronze medalist, showcased his talent throughout the tournament. After defeating Lewis Richardson of Great Britain in a close split decision , he narrowly fell short of securing a quota for India. He lost his quarter-final bout in the 71kg weight class to American boxer Omari Jones in a 4-1 split decision . Since only the semi-finalists secured quotas at this tournament, Dev’s defeat effectively extinguished India’s chances of securing a quota in the 71kg weight class .
All other Indian boxers competing in the first qualifier, including Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Deepak Bhoria (51kg), Narender Berwal (+92kg), Jaismine Lamboria (60kg), Sanjeet Kumar (92kg), Ankushita Boro (66kg), Lakshya Chahar (80kg), and Mohammed Hussamuddin (57kg), lost their opening round bouts or exited in the second round.
While the setback is undeniable, there’s still hope. The second World Qualification Tournament is scheduled for May in Bangkok, Thailand. This presents another opportunity for Indian boxers to qualify for the Olympics.
One bright spot for Indian boxing is the success of the women’s team. Four talented boxers – Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar) (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) – have already secured their places in the Olympics based on their performances at the Asian Games .
The upcoming qualifiers in Bangkok offer a chance for redemption. With up to 51 quotas available, India can still secure nine more quotas in boxing for the Paris Olympics . The unwavering support of the fans will be crucial as the boxers strive to punch their tickets to Paris. Here’s hoping they can turn the tide and bring home Olympic glory for India!
