India Inches Closer to Turkish Women’s Cup 2024 Title with Win Over Hong Kong China

In a thrilling encounter at the Gold City Sports Complex in Alanya, Turkey, on Saturday, India’s women’s football team secured a significant 2-0 victory over Hong Kong China. Anju Tamang and Soumya Guguloth showcased their prowess by scoring a goal each, propelling India closer to the title in the Turkish Women’s Cup 2024.

With this triumph, India’s women’s football team, which previously triumphed over Estonia with a score of 4-3, now boasts six points from two matches. Their next challenge awaits against Kosovo in the final round-robin fixture scheduled for Tuesday.

Kosovo, also accumulating six points from two matches, sets the stage for a thrilling showdown, resembling a virtual final. However, India must secure a victory against Kosovo, as they currently trail behind on goal difference.

Despite their commendable achievements in the South Asian circuit, winning the SAFF Cup five times and clinching the SAF Games gold medal thrice, India’s women’s football team has yet to claim an international title outside the region. The Turkish Women’s Cup 2024 presents an opportune moment for India to rewrite history and secure their maiden international title on foreign soil.

India’s relentless attack from the onset of the match showcased their determination, with players like Indumathi Kathiresan, Anju Tamang, and Pyari Xaxa posing a constant threat to the Hong Kong China defense. Anju Tamang’s clinical finish in the 19th minute, following a swift counter-attack orchestrated by Manisha Kalyan, set the tone for India’s dominance.

The second half witnessed India’s continued dominance, as they maintained pressure on Hong Kong China, limiting their opportunities. Goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu’s pinpoint free kick in the 79th minute initiated India’s second goal, expertly converted by Soumya Guguloth, sealing India’s victory.

Despite a late surge from Hong Kong China, India held firm to secure a well-deserved 2-0 win, further solidifying their position in the tournament. With the final match against Kosovo looming large, India’s women’s football team is poised to leave a lasting impression in the Turkish Women’s Cup 2024 and etch their names in history.
